Best Projectors for Home Cinema UK 2026

Why a Projector Still Beats a TV for Home Cinema

A 65-inch TV costs around £800–£2,000. A 65-inch projected image costs under £400. A 100-inch projected image costs the same £400. That's the fundamental maths that makes projectors so compelling for dedicated home cinema spaces. If you have a room that can be reasonably darkened — a living room in the evening, a dedicated cinema room, or a converted garage — a projector delivers a genuinely cinematic experience at a fraction of the cost of an equivalent screen size in TV form.

The technology has advanced dramatically in recent years. 4K DLP projectors are now available for under £1,500. Laser projectors offer lamp-free convenience and consistent brightness. Short-throw models sit just centimetres from the wall, eliminating the need for ceiling mounting. We tested twelve projectors across six months to find the best for UK buyers in 2026.

1. Epson EH-TW9400 — Best Overall

Epson's 3LCD flagship delivers exceptional colour accuracy and a 2,600 lumens brightness that handles moderately lit rooms well. The 4K enhancement technology (not native 4K) produces sharp images, and HDR support is among the best we've tested. Lens shift and zoom make installation flexible. At £2,199, it's a significant investment — but one that rewards with truly cinematic images at 100 inches and beyond.

2. BenQ W2720i — Best 4K Under £1,500

The BenQ W2720i uses a native DLP 4K chip (8.3 million pixels, not pixel-shifted) and delivers excellent contrast for the price. Android TV is built in, so you can stream Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime without a separate device. Brightness at 2,000 lumens is adequate for a darkened room. Our top recommendation for most buyers at this price point.

3. Optoma UHD50X — Best Budget 4K

At around £799, the Optoma UHD50X offers genuine 4K DLP projection at a price that was unimaginable three years ago. Gaming latency is exceptional (4ms in gaming mode), making it one of the few projectors genuinely suitable for console gaming as well as films. A 3,400 lumen output means it can operate in rooms that aren't completely blacked out.

What to Look for When Buying a Home Cinema Projector

  • Resolution — 1080p is still excellent for a budget. 4K (or 4K-enhanced) makes a visible difference at screen sizes above 90 inches.
  • Brightness (lumens) — 2,000+ lumens for moderately dark rooms; 3,000+ for rooms with ambient light. Home cinema rooms can work with 1,500 lumens if fully blacked out.
  • Contrast ratio — native contrast (not dynamic) matters most. 15,000:1 native or higher is excellent.
  • Throw ratio — determines how far the projector sits from the screen. Standard throw (1.4–2.0) needs significant distance; short throw (<1.0) can sit close to the wall.
  • Lamp vs laser — lamp projectors need bulb replacement (£80–£200 every 4,000–6,000 hours); laser projectors last 20,000+ hours without maintenance.
  • HDR support — essential for 4K content; look for HDR10 as minimum, HDR10+ or Dolby Vision as premium.

Projector vs TV: Which Is Right for You?

Projectors make sense if: you want a screen larger than 85 inches; you have a room that can be darkened; and you're willing to manage the installation. TVs make sense if: you watch a lot of daytime TV with curtains open; you prioritise convenience over screen size; or you want the best possible HDR peak brightness (TV OLEDs still win here).
